9 steps to take a measurement

In order to successfully carry out a measurement with the VITALITY CHECK, please follow the steps below in the order described.

When the VITALITY CHECK is switched off, no LED lights up. If an LED lights up, please first switch off the device by pressing the ON / OFF button for a long time (approx. 15 seconds).

When you turn on the device by pressing the ON / OFF button, the status indicator should light up blue. If not, please press the connection button until the status indicator lights up blue. Blue indicates that the scanner has opened a WiFi access point (Figure 4). How to connect the device to the WiFi access point is described in chapter 9.2.

If there is no further action after a timeout of 60 seconds, the device switches off automatically.

9.1 Switching the device on and off

If you turn on the scanner by pressing the power button while the battery is charging, or if the battery has previously been charged and the scanner is still connected to the USB cable, the status indicator will glow white (Figure 5) and will not open a WiFi access point. Please disconnect the USB cable.

If the device's battery level is too low to take a measurement, the status indicator will flash red several times before the device automatically turns off. If the device does not turn on, the battery may be completely empty. In both cases, please charge the battery (Chapter 8).

9.2 How to establish a connection with the access point / WiFi of the scanner

After you have successfully switched on the device, the status indicator lights up blue. If not, press the connect button until the indicator glows blue. Blue indicates that the scanner has opened a WiFi access point. In access point mode, the scanner provides WiFi that a smartphone can connect to.Now switch on your smartphone / tablet, open the Vitality app and select the "Setup wizard" by pressing the three-bar symbol in the top left (Figure 7). Please follow the procedure of the "setup wizard" step by step to connect the scanner and phone / tablet (chapter 9.3 and 9.4) and then to connect the scanner to the external WiFi or to the hotspot of a phone / tablet (chapter 9.5).

In order to enable a connection between the scanner and the phone / tablet, the wizard asks you to open the settings of your phone / tablet and the selection of the WiFi settings. All WiFi networks in the area are displayed. Please select biozoom_xxxx (Figure 7), this is the WiFi name of the access point of your scanner. A four-digit number consisting of numbers (0-9) and / or letters (af) is displayed instead of "xxxx". The specific WiFi name of your scanner is printed on the back of the scanner. Some phones / tablets inform you that the selected WiFi has no internet connection. This is correct because the access point only connects the scanner and the phone / tablet. In some cases the phone / tablet will ask you to confirm that it is not connected to the internet. Please confirm this. If you don't confirm, the scanner and phone / tablet will be connected.

9.3 Confirming a connection with the access point

The smallest icon of the progress indicator (6) lights up green when the scanner is connected to a telephone.

9.4 Confirming a connection between app and scanner

The first and second icons of the progress indicator light up green and the status indicator lights up blue when the scanner is connected to the VITALITY CHECK app on your smartphone/tablet.

9.5 Selecting the WiFi for historical measurements

When you perform a measurement, the measured data is sent to a central server for calculation. The result is displayed on the phone / tablet. Therefore, the scanner must be connected to a WiFi network that transmits the data to the central server via the Internet. There are two ways to do this:

Use of an existing WiFi, e.g. B. Your home WiFi or office WiFi

Apply the phone / tablet hotspot

If you have not yet set up a hotspot on your phone, you must first configure it accordingly, as the name and password of the hotspot must be known to connect the scanner and hotspot. Open your phone's settings. In most cases, the hotspot is a submenu of the WiFi settings. Use a name and password that you can easily remember for configuring the hotspot; it will help you connect the scanner to the hotspot.

The following existing WiFi's cannot be used:

  • WiFi networks that require you to enter information into a browser to gain access, such as: B. Hotel WiFi's, WiFi on some trains or planes

  • WiFi networks that do not allow communication from one device to another, e.g. B. Hotel WiFi's, company guest networks

In all these cases, please select the hotspot on your phone / tablet as an alternative

The scanner continuously scans for WiFi networks and sends the networks it finds to the phone / tablet via the access point (see Section 9.4). The networks are displayed in the VITALITY CHECK app. Please select the desired WiFi network and enter the password in the opened window. If the scanner can connect to the specified WiFi network, all three symbols of the progress indicator light up green. The status indicator lights up blue.

When the scanner is connected to the WiFi network, the access point will be closed. Therefore the WiFi indicator and the status indicator light up green and the light of the progress indicator is switched off.

In order to continue to enable communication between the scanner and the phone / tablet, the phone / tablet must now also be connected to the same WLAN that the scanner is connected to. If this WLAN is your home WLAN or your office WLAN, your phone / tablet was usually connected to this WLAN beforehand. In this case, your phone / tablet automatically connects to this WLAN and no further action is necessary to connect the scanner and phone / tablet.

In all other cases you have to open the settings of your phone / tablet. Please select the submenu for the WiFi settings. Connect your phone to the same WiFi network that the scanner is connected to.

The scanner and phone / tablet are now communicating via the router (existing WiFi network).

The VITALITY CHECK is now ready for the measurement. The app displays the page for starting a measurement.

9.5.2 Set up the hotspot of the phone / tablet

You have successfully followed the instructions in chapters 9.2 - 9.5. Therefore, the status indicator lights up blue and two icons of the progress indicator light up green, indicating that the scanner and the app are connected via the scanner's access point. The scanner now continuously scans for WiFi networks, the networks found are displayed in the app.

In order to connect the scanner to the hotspot of the phone / tablet, you have to press the plus sign (+) at the top of the screen. In the window that now opens you can enter the SSID (name of the hotspot) and the password of the hotspot. Press the word "Connect" to complete the process.

The information is sent to the scanner via the existing access point connection. The attempt to connect the scanner to the hotspot must of course fail because the hotspot has not yet been opened.

Therefore please open the WiFi settings of the smartphone and switch on the hotspot (Figure 13a). The connection to the access point is then terminated. Because the scanner saved the credentials it sent, all of the progress bar characters will turn on to confirm that the hotspot is now open.

Please switch the scanner off and on again. The scanner is automatically connected to the hotspot. To indicate this, the status indicator and the WiFi indicator light up green and the light of the progress indicator is off.

The VITALITY CHECK app displays the page for starting a measurement (Figure 14). You can start a measurement by pressing the apple symbol.

9.5.3 Automatically connect to a WiFi network

The scanner saves the login details of the last connected WiFi network. Therefore, a connection to this network will be established automatically at the next session, if this network is available. This is very convenient as it allows you to skip some of the steps described above. Please note that only the last network used is saved. However, there are small differences in how you connect to an existing one

WiFi network or a hotspot.

Connection to an existing WiFi network

For an automatic connection, please proceed as follows:

Turn on your phone / tablet

Since your phone / tablet stores the access data of the WiFi networks to which you were previously connected, the connection is established immediately after switching on. If your phone / tablet was already switched on, the connection will of course be established if the router is visible to your phone / tablet.

Note: If you have multiple routers or WiFi access points, you will need to connect your phone to the same WiFi that your scanner is configured for.

Open the VITALITY CHECK app

Turn on the scanner

The status indicator lights up orange briefly, but immediately changes to green. The WiFi indicator also lights up green. As the scanner is now connected to the existing WLAN, it is ready to perform a measurement.

Connection to the hotspot

For an automatic connection, please proceed as follows:

  • Turn on your phone / tablet.

  • Now open the WiFi settings of your phone / tablet. There you will find a submenu for opening a WLAN hotspot. Please activate the hotspot.

  • Turn on the scanner

The status indicator briefly lights up orange, but immediately changes to green. The WiFi indicator also lights up green. Now that the scanner is connected to the hotspot, it is ready to take a measurement.

9.6 Performing a measurement

Before measuring for the first time, please read the general recommendations for correct measurement, which are listed in Chapter 10 "Measurement Basics". It will help you a lot to get a correct result.

9.6.1 Automatic hand recognition

You have opened the VITALITY CHECK app and see the "Start measurement" button (status display and WiFi display light up). Please press the button now. The smallest symbol on the progress indicator flashes green and prompts you to place your hand on the sensor.

Note: Please carefully read the instructions on how to place your hand on the sensor in order to obtain a correct measurement (see chapter 10).

The scanner will now check to see if your hand is present. Every time the scanner looks for your hand, it will blink with orange LEDs. The measurement is only started when the hand is on the sensor. This is a safety mechanism to prevent the user from being disturbed by the bright light of a measurement in progress. An automatic timeout stops the orange flashing after 60 seconds if the user has not placed his hand on the sensor.

9.6.2 Automatic start of the measurement

When the sensor has recognized that the hand has been placed on, the measurement begins and the smallest symbol in the progress indicator stops flashing and lights up green continuously. At this point, the hand should not be moved on the sensor to avoid incorrect measurements. The small symbol indicates that the measurement is in the first half.

The measurement data is continuously transmitted to the server for calculation via WiFi and the Internet. Every time a data packet is sent, the WiFi indicator will flicker.

9.6.3 Measurement progress

Since the measurement is in progress, the first and second symbols of the progress indicator light up after a while.

The measurement is finished when all three symbols of the progress indicator light up green. The hand should now be removed from the sensor.

If you do not remove your hand, the smallest symbol in the progress indicator will start to flash. Please remove your hand now.

When you have removed your hand, the first two symbols of the progress indicator are switched off immediately. The third symbol lights up until all data has been transferred to the server.

When all data has been sent to the server, the largest symbol of the progress indicator is also switched off and only the status indicator and the WiFi indicator remain lit.

If you are taking an antioxidant-intensive measurement, the next measurement must be taken. Therefore the smallest symbol of the progress indicator flashes again and four LEDs of the sensor switch on continuously one after the other. It indicates that you need to place your hand on the sensor surface again. Please follow the procedure described in the previous chapters (9.6.1 ff). If you do not hang up your hand, an error message will appear on the phone / tablet after 60 seconds.

When you have carried out all four measurements of the intensive measurement method or have only carried out a single measurement, the scanner is automatically switched off. At the same time, the app informs you that the result is available. If you click on the link that is displayed, a website will open that presents the result and recommendations for improving it.

If you want to take another measurement, you have to open the app and turn on the scanner again.

10 Basics of measurement

The VITALITY CHECK is a sensitive sensor that is able to detect certain substances on human skin. It is helpful to follow the tips below for accurate and reliable results.

Preparation before starting the measurement

Rest your body before starting the measurement.

Exercising immediately before the measurement often has an impact on the antioxidant measurement as well as heart rate variability that doesn't reflect your general level. If you want maximum measurement accuracy, you should give your body 20 minutes of rest between training and the measurement.

Measure at the same time each day for consistent results. Antioxidant levels can change throughout the day.

Your body relaxes and recovers while you sleep. You can see that in the antioxidant level too. Most people have a higher value in the morning and during the activity and stress of the day the value goes down and is lowest in the evening. For some people, it increases right after a healthy meal and lunch break. The changes between morning and evening are typically on the order of 0.1 to 0.5. One can also find differences between Monday and Friday due to workload or occupational stress and weekend rest.

Measure only on dry skin. After you've washed your hands with soap and dried them thoroughly, water will remain on your skin for a while. It will have a little impact on the measurement, so it is better to wait 30 minutes after washing your hands to get the most accurate results.

Measure only on uninjured, healthy, untreated, bare, and dry skin for consistent results. If you suffer from any skin condition it is likely that the sensor will not be able to measure properly as it is only calibrated for healthy skin.

Skin treatments of any kind, e.g. B. skin care products, cosmetics, sun protection, tattoos influence the measurement. Hair also has an impact. We therefore recommend measuring at the root of the thumb of the right hand.

Perform the measurement

  • Measure while seated with the scanner on the table.

  • Place your elbow on the table to check the pressure when placing your hand on the sensor. Do not use extra force, the weight of your hand / arm is sufficient

You can achieve the ideal contact pressure by letting your hand rest with its own weight on the sensor. Do not use the muscles of the arm to raise your hand or press the sensor. The ideal contact pressure corresponds to a weight of about 800 g, i.e. about two pounds. The reason for this is that your blood contains antioxidants. If you press too hard on the sensor, you will push some blood out of your skin and change the effective antioxidant level.

The sensor has a function that compensates for the effect of the contact force. So you don't need to worry about getting perfect contact pressure. But if your contact pressure is ideal, you will still get a slightly better result. Forcing blood out of the skin makes it completely impossible to measure heart rate variability.

Sitting position - sensor on the table. Place your elbows on the table - no additional force when measuring

  • Gently place your right hand on the sensor using the groove to precisely align the hand. The measurement always at the same point helps you to correctly recognize the effects of a change in diet and lifestyle.

  • Do not move your hand or shift your weight during the measurement.

It is important to keep your hand steady during the measurement. The sensor takes a number of different measurements and compares the results. If the hand moves between measurements or the contact with the sensor varies, the comparison works less well.

  • Avoid bright light on the hand during the measurement (sunlight, bright artificial light). Cover your hand if necessary.

Bright light can penetrate your hand. You can try this out by turning on your smartphone's LED flashlight and placing your finger on it. You can see that especially red light can penetrate the finger completely. Sunlight is even stronger and can penetrate your entire hand. This is why the biozoom sensor refuses to measure in direct sunlight. If you want maximum precision, you can help the sensor by making sure that no bright light hits the back of your hand during the measurement. Normal ceiling light is usually not a problem.

  • General aspects that affect the level of the measurement results

  • Note that prolonged exposure to the sun or using a tanning bed can temporarily lower your antioxidant levels.

Influence of wearing gloves

If you wear gloves to work you should be aware that sometimes there is a significant impact on antioxidant levels. You will get better results if you always measure before work.

  • Note that illness can lower your antioxidant levels.

When you have a cold or any other illness, it puts stress on your body. Be aware that when this happens, your antioxidant levels will usually go down. Wait until you have recovered before comparing two results.

  • Appropriate exercise will help your antioxidant levels, but vigorous exercise can temporarily lower your antioxidant levels.

  • Note that smoking results in consistently lower levels of antioxidants compared to not smoking

  • Note that excessive alcohol consumption can temporarily lower antioxidant levels

11 Troubleshooting

In the following you will find a table that summarizes all functions and displays relevant for using the scanner. Should you encounter unexpected behavior on the part of the scanner, this table will help you to understand it quickly. If further action is required, this table will inform you.
